RICHIESINTHEHOUSE A STAR ON SYNTHETICS
5-year-old gelding Richiesinthehouse has rattled off two eye-catching allowance victories to kick off his 2019 season and, with both aforementioned wins in mind, quickly moved to the top of the list of Bay Area older sprinters heading into the spring.
On January 10, Richiesinthehouse ran at Golden Gate for the first time and scored a dominant 6-furlong allowance triumph against Oakland Stakes winner Touched by Autism and next out Southern California stakes winner Rye. He earned a 93 Beyer speed figure for his effort.
This past Sunday, Richiesinthehouse proved the January 10 allowance win was no fluke, going to the lead and setting wicked fast fractions of 21.68 and 44.14 before holding off classy gelding Summersimage. Richiesinthehouse won the race by a length and a half, completed the six panels in 1:09.18 while receiving a 92 Beyer.
Richiesinthehouse has won 9 races from 12 starts, with 2 other second place finishes and earnings of $216,141. The son of Sidney’s Candy is out of the mare Stramin Heat, who won the CTBA Stakes at Del Mar in 2008 and has produced three multiple winning foals. Her fourth foal, Smokin Richie, is a 2-year-old Indiana bred colt by Awesome of Course. Longtime Thoroughbred owner Richard Ravin owns Streamin Heat and bred all four foals out of the dam. Ravin currently co-owns Richiesinthehouse with Patrica’s Hope LLC.
UPDATE ON JOCKEYS PEDRO TERRERO AND PEDRO FLORES
Northern California jockeys Pedro Terrero and Pedro Flores were involved in two separate in-race incidents this past weekend. According to multiple sources, both journeymen riders are resting and in good spirits but will be out of action for an extended period of time.
In Race 7 on Saturday afternoon, Terrero was riding Dreaming About You when the 3-year-old filly clipped heels at the top of the stretch and stumbled, unseating Terrero in the process. Terrero suffered a head injury as a result of the fall and has spent time at Highland Hospital in Oakland, where doctors are closely monitoring his progress.
On Sunday, Pedro Flores rode maiden gelding El Suspiro in the final race on the card. Just past the quarter pole, El Suspiro was bumped by an inside rival and knocked sideways. Flores lost his balance and was tossed from the right side of the horse. Flores was treated at Highland, where doctors found a fracture in one of his vertebrae. On Sunday night, Flores took to his personal Facebook page to thank many well-wishers for their support.
The two horses involved in the incidents, Dreaming About You and El Suspiro, were caught by outriders and walked off the track. All reports indicate both horses were doing well and escaped injury.
The entire family at Golden Gate Fields wishes Pedro Terrero and Pedro Flores a speedy and healthy recovery.
EL CAMINO REAL DERBY NOMINATIONS CLOSE THURSDAY
Nominations for Northern California’s feature 3-year-old race, the $100,000 El Camino Real Derby, close this Thursday. The El Camino Real Derby, a mile and an eighth contest on Tapeta, is an ungraded stake but features a pair of enticing incentives.
Track officials announced in December that the 2019 El Camino Real Derby winner would be given a free berth to the Preakness. However, a horse that earns the free Preakness berth must be Triple Crown nominated.
There are also Kentucky Derby points in play with the El Camino Real Derby: the winner receives 10 points, the runner up taking home 5 points, and the third and fourth place finishers earn 2 points and 1 point, respectively.
Horsemen that would like to nominate their 3-year-olds to the El Camino Real Derby can contact Golden Gate Fields Stakes Coordinator Lisa Jones at (626) 388-8062 or by e-mail at lisnpac12@hotmail.com.
